Superman and Jesus

After watching the superman film and reading the Kozlovic text, I can see why people make comparisons to Jesus and superman as the "Jesus of superheroes" I guess. In the movie, Jor-El sent his son Kal-El down to earth just like God sent Jesus to earth to teach people the true way of life. The text makes several comparisons on how Jesus and Superman is alike because they both started their missions around the same age which was 30, both had earthly family ties, both displayed incredible powers, and both acted as saviors. Throughout the movie, you can see how people looked at Superman and worshiped him because they knew that he wasn't human, and he did miraculous things like saving people's lives and protecting them from evil injustice. In the movie, superman flew around the earth counterclockwise to reverse time and stop Lex Luthor from going about the destruction of his plan, and when he turned Luthor and Otis in to authorities he said "we're on the same team". This shows how superman was showing his humbleness because superheroes presented in today's times are very cocky and probably would've went overboard trying to receive recognition on how incredible they are instead of simply doing something for the greater good of society. Going back to Jesus' times, he didn't boast about the miraculous things he could do when someone questioned him or said he was a fake king; he just moved about his business letting the critics criticize and allowing his followers/ supporters to follow him in his footsteps. Another aspect that could be compared is how Jesus and superman both were truthful figures. Superman told Lois that he never lied and that was also reinforced by Luthor when he superman never lied. Jesus was also truthful because when he had to go up to the council, they asked who he was and he responded as "king" even though the council didn't understand that he wasn't saying he's a king from that world, but he didn't even care to clear confusion because he knew who was supporting him and who laughed at him.

  1. Thanks, AJ! I appreciate your ideas, though you've jumped the gun a bit since we're finishing Superman today in class. My question is, now what? What is it that we learn from this comparison between Jesus and Superman? What does this tell us about religion, about storytelling and myth, or about the society we live in?
