Can Superheroes be compared to religious figures?

Can Superheroes be compared to religious like figures? Through several different films we’ve seen in class we can argue a couple different comparisons between religious characters. The first superhero that comes to mind immediately is Superman. Superman is the most popular hero of all time. When it comes to heroes and powers Superman is seen as the “God” like character of them all. There are different ways on how people can relate Superman to Jesus. Going back to our reading from class Superman as a Christ Figure: The American Pop Culture Movie Messiah, they mentioned how “ both Superman and Jesus had earthly family ties, both had heavenly origins, both heroes were raised incognito on Earth, both were of royal blood, both righted wrongs, both acted as saviors, both displayed incredible powers, and they both performed miracles. After watching the movie its easy to spot how they based Superman’s character to that of Jesus Christ. I found it interesting how they created this character that’s held to such standard of that of a higher power. In the scene where Superman saved Lois from the crashing helicopter, the Television commentator described the rescue as a miracle. This went hand in hand on how Jesus was considered a miracle worker and accomplished several different miracles by saving his people. They both had a following of a couple friends who were able to tell the stories of what they witnessed. They both lived the lives of regular humans, but they lived for one purpose. That purpose was to help and serve the people in need, and to teach them the righteous way of living. Our reading also described how Jesus’s early earthly life wasn’t really described in the bible the same way how Superman’s childhood wasn’t shown in the movie besides when his earthly father passed away.
